The California Alliance for Retired Americans (CARA) is a statewide nonprofit organization that unites retired workers and community groups to win social and economic justice, full civil rights, and a better, more secure future for ourselves, our families, and future generations. CARA is the state body of the Alliance for Retired Americans, the AFL-CIO's official retiree organization founded in 2003.

What We Do

The California Alliance for Retired Americans is building a statewide network of hundreds of organizations to educate and inform its membership, the public, and elected officials about issues that affect the well-being of California’s older adults. CARA is working towards advancing and achieving just and equitable living conditions for seniors and people with disabilities within the state and the nation through legislative advocacy consistent with the educational and charitable purposes of an advocacy organization exempt from federal taxation under section 501(c)(4) of the Internal Revenue Code.

To create a statewide organization to educate, develop leaders, research, and provide technical assistance to inform seniors, senior organizations, the public, the media, and policy makers about issues that affect the well-being of senior citizens. CARA Education Fund’s work is consistent with the educational and social welfare purposes of a charitable organization exempt from federal taxation under section 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

mISSION

The CARA Education Fund's first project was the formation of the CARA Leadership Academy, a training and skills-building program for CARA’s current and emerging leaders. Since 2006, the CARA Education Fund has sponsored thirty Academies in California, and nearly 1,200 students have completed the course. The COVID-19 pandemic started CARA's monthly senior-focused educational forums to encourage learning together and combat isolation.
