CARA’s founding convention was a two-day event held at the Furama Hotel in Los Angeles in November 2003. During the convention, members elected the first Board of Directors, hired Executive Director Emerita Jodi Reid, and adopted a new Constitution and Bylaws that established the goals for our organization. At the end of the convention, members passed around a hat to collect money for store workers striking near the hotel and later joined them on the picket line.
CARA has continued the tradition of holding annual conventions where we host candidate forums, speaker panels, and workshops. The convention continues to be a place where members vote on the organization's yearly priorities and come together to lean into our shared values.
