Rural Healthcare for Seniors and Hospital Closures

On March 27, the California Alliance for Retired Americans (CARA) for our Friday Forum featured Maia Schneider, Daniela Sartori, and Ryan Skolnick for.a timely discussion on Rural Healthcare for Seniors and hospital closures. It brought together advocates, community members, and experts to explore how healthcare cuts are impacting retirees and what solutions are needed to protect access to care. About the presenters:

Maia Schneider is Executive Director of Business and Strategy Development for Marshall, leading healthcare strategy and government relations at the local, state, and federal levels. With over 20 years in healthcare, she has led community hospital development, philanthropy, and a successful $97 million bond measure to support hospital infrastructure.

Daniela Sartori is a biomedicine professional with advanced degrees in microbiology, immunology, and biotechnology, and formerly worked at Glenn Medical Center until its closure in 2025. She currently manages an independent clinical laboratory and is active in healthcare and education advocacy, with experience teaching at Shasta College and CSU Chico.

Ryan Skolnick has been a community organizer for the California Nurses Association since 2019. As a part of the Nurses' Campaign to Win CalCare team at CNA, he works with community leaders, organizations, and activists to build a statewide grassroots movement for guaranteed health care for all. He also has experience educating and organizing for single-payer health care as an executive board member of the California Democratic Party.
