Retiree of the Year
Sacramento – October 22, 2019
CARA decided to sponsor the Retiree of the Year Award to honor and recognize a person who has contributed to the work of our organization – and who is dedicated to advocating on behalf of seniors and our families to promote aging with dignity and independence. There are hundreds of people who have demonstrated their commitment to CARA and to building senior power. We plan to honor more of these incredible people in the years ahead.
However, the choice for our first award recipient was obvious to the CARA Board of Directors. Nan Brasmer, CARA’s President and wonder woman needed to be our first nominee. Here’s why:
Nan was born and raised in Western Oregon. She moved to Sacramento with her husband in 1959 when he began his career in education. For her first 15 years in California, Nan was able to be a stay-at-home mom to her daughters – and become a “chronic volunteer”. The family moved to Manteca in the 70’s, where Nan’s union career began.
Nan was a library clerk at Manteca Unified School District for 13 years. She joined the California School Employees Association and served in many capacities in her local union. She was elected to the first statewide political action committee for CSEA and served on the CSEA State Board as area director, first vice president, and state president. After serving two terms as CSEA state president, Nan went to work for CSEA as a labor relations representative. Upon retirement in 2000, Nan was elected chair of the CSEA Retirees.
When the Alliance for Retired Americans began organizing state affiliates, Nan stepped up with her retirees, her skills, and her red jacket to assist in California. CARA elected Nan as president at our founding convention in 2003 and she continues as board president today (term ends in 2021). Nan has two daughters, three grandchildren and five great grandchildren, and seven cats (at last count).

AFGE Social Security Rally
Modesto – July 24, 2018
Have you heard about the White House’s latest attack on workers?
The administration is now banning union members from having an office in federal buildings starting with the Social Security office.
Management will have an office but not union members. This move attacks and silences workers, the very people helping seniors with their Social Security benefits.
